Precision drive system manufacturer maxon has released the IDX 70 brushless DC (BLDC) motor with the GB65 right-angle gearbox. Integrating a maxon EPOS4 position controller and housed within a robust IP65-rated enclosure, the new drive system is a compact unit for demanding applications in robotics, automation, and logistics.

The IDX 70 BLDC motor achieves high power density, generating 7.268 Nm peak torque and 3,460 mNm continuous torque in a unit just 70mm wide and 210mm long. With a maximum output power up to 750 W at speeds up to 6,000 rpm, the IDX 70 provides equivalent performance to motors with a 25% larger footprint, making the BLDC motor a versatile choice for space-constrained applications.
Paired with the GB65 right-angle gearbox from maxon brand Parvalux, a choice of gear ratios including 80, 120, and 160 offers a wide range of output speeds. This is matched with up to 120 Nm torque continuous operation and 300 Nm in intermittent operation. Offering compact dimensions, the right-angle gearbox measures 140mm long and 88mm wide. With a choice of bronze or steel gears, the unit achieves 55-75% efficiency alongside quiet operation.
The integrated EPOS4 controller enhances the IDX 70’s capabilities with precise positioning and speed control. EPOS4 is easy to use with tools including a Startup Wizard for step-by-step configuration, Auto Tuning that automatically sets ideal control parameters, plus analysis tools including Data Recorder and Command Analyzer. Set up is achieved via the free EPOS Studio software, and maxon provides comprehensive programming libraries to speed up integration into different system environments.
For flexible system connectivity, the IDX 70 supports EtherCAT and CANopen communication protocols for integration with a wide range of industrial networks.
The drive system’s robust IP65 enclosure protects against the ingress of water spray and dust, making it suitable for harsh environments. To safeguard continuous operation, an integrated temperature sensor prevents overheating, enhancing the reliability and lifespan of the system.
“The combination of BLDC motor, position controller, and right-angle gearbox, is perfect for applications in tough environments that need high torque density with compact dimensions,” says William Mason, maxon UK & Ireland’s Managing Director. “The unit achieves dynamic performance, high precision, and IP65 durability, making it ideal for applications such as robotics and automation.”
